I hate to go to the Dentist

Let’s face it.

Having a dental procedure, which by definition is performed inside your mouth, is more a more emotionally significant event than having a medical procedure done in the area of your elbow or knee, for instance.

Because the mouth is so intimately involved in eating, breathing, communicating and loving,  whatever happens there is emotionally charged.

The mouth is emotionally energized because, as a baby, the mouth was the first organ we used to interact with our world.

We understood everything by putting it into our mouth.
And our mouth retains a psychological importance far beyond its anatomical size all of our lives.

So, it is understandable that we are exquisitely sensitive to whatever happens inside our mouth.

For whatever reason, sometimes this self-protectiveness becomes over-developed and an obstacle to obtaining the dental care we need to maintain a healthy mouth.

At Yellow Springs Dental Care, we  have helped many of our patients achieve the self-knowledge that permits them to receive regular dental care with deep appreciation and tranquility.

A dentally averse patient may say, “I hate to go to the dentist.”

We recognize this as a request to desensitize this exaggeratedly negative reaction to a dental visit.

We afford the opportunity for the patient to become more specific about exactly what aspects of the dental visit are perceived as a problem.

There is usually not a total rejection of everything to do with a dental appointment.

It often occurs that by giving special care pertaining to a few problem areas, the patient gradually becomes desensitized and able to attend to their oral health.

The first step is to complete the I-DO test. (Inventory of Dental Obstacles)

This is a multiple-choice written questionnaire that allows the patient to identify the specific aspects of a dental visit that need to be customized to eliminate the fear-factors.

When you think you may be ready, we’ll have you complete the Inventory of Dental Obstacles test. And then, in discussion with you, we’ll be able to design the kind of dental appointment that would be specific to meeting your needs.

Sometimes we prepare a relaxation CD for you to use at home and during your eventual dental procedure appointments. The process is individually customized to your specific needs.

While this occurs within a dental context, it is not an item paid for by dental insurance.

Desensitization is not performed on a time schedule. You participate in the desensitization at your own speed. Nothing will occur without your permission or before you are prepared to proceed.

We welcome the opportunity to help you design
Your Perfect Dental Appointment.
