Thursday, April 26, 2007 at 09:22PM Tooth enamel is very dense. It’s one of the top five hardest organic materials that exist in nature and is the most mineralized tissue of human body.
We have long used pumice-like products to polish teeth. But enamel is pierced with microscopic pores – where the stain penetrates to dull your teeth. Diamond paste, also used to develop the lustrous surface on gemstones, is used in dentistry as the final smoothing agent when polishing porcelain restorations.
The tiny diamonds in the polishing paste are smaller than the coarse pumice. When they are used to smooth natural enamel, they can gain access the tooth pores and polish out the molecules of pigment that are hiding there.
Polishing with diamonds is a procedure for that special occasion -- Sweet Sixteen, Weddings, and anniversary parties-- it cannot be repetitively used as part of routine cleanings. But it leaves an ultra smooth surface that repels debris and stain.
Besides...who can resist the opportunity
to rinse out a mouthful of diamonds?
