Poison Chinese Toothpaste
Thursday, May 24, 2007 at 04:12PM
The Food and Drug Administration, responding to the discovery of a potentially toxic chemical in Chinese toothpaste exports, said it is blocking all toothpaste from China at the U.S. border and won't release it until tests show it is safe.
The action comes following reports that authorities have found diethylene glycol, a chemical used in products such as antifreeze, in toothpaste in Panama, the Dominican Republic and Australia. Chinese authorities are investigating the origin of the toothpaste.
This follows the dealths of over 100 persons, earlier, in Panama who were killed after consuming a Government Health Ministry manufactured cough syrup that contained the same mis-labled poisonous antifreeze.
Manufacturing toothpaste has always been sensitive because it's something that you put into your mouth. You can't take the risk of people being affected..
The FDA action came as the U.S. is increasingly concerned about the safety of food imported from China. Wheat flour tainted with the chemical melamine was blamed for pet deaths and led to the recall of pet-food products.
Earlier this week, the Dominican Republic government removed 10,000 tubes of Chinese toothpaste under the "Excel" and "Mr. Cool" brands. Panama also removed those brands last week.
General Mills is undeterred by the toll taken of American dogs and cats by poisoned Chinese Pet Food. One of General Mills food brands, Wanchai Ferry, offers premium dough products to consumers across China and Hong Kong. All Wanchai Ferry products, from wontons to dumplings, provide consumers with authentic, chinese homemade taste. These products are made in China and imported into the US. There needs to be strict quality control on these food items to avoid the problems experienced by Panama (Cough Syrup), The United States of America (poison tainted pet food) and the Dominican Republic (Toothpaste)
The FDA lists the following Chinese Products in the alert:
- Cooldent Fluoride
- Cooldent Spearmint
- Cooldent ICE
- Dr. Cool
- Everfresh Toothpaste
- Superdent Toothpaste
- Clean Rite Toothpaste
- Oralmax Extreme
- Oral Bright Fresh Spearmint Flavor
- Bright Max Peppermint Flavor
- ShiR Fresh Mint Fluoride Paste
- DentaPro
- DentaKleen
- DentaKleen Junior
In earlier times, the harm done to the public by unsafe products (eg. General Electric wiring and The Beverly Hills Fire) would be pursued in the courts. But trying Chinese malefactors half way round the world is beyond the resources of the impoverished victims of chinese poison toothpaste.
