Dental School Dental Clinics Save Money

Finding Lower Cost Dentistry

Supervised treatment in an academic setting proves to be viable alternative for some patients.

The passage of the Health Care Reform in March of 2010,
offered little imparovement of dental benefits for
undeserved patients in need of dentistry.

It will take years to increase the number of dental providers, whether thay be "full fledged" Dentists, or some form of limited "Dental Nurses" such as have been trained in New Zealand to serve the native american populations of the Alaska wilderness areas.

One dependable source of reduced cost dental care are the Dental Schools.  But 14 states don;t have dental schools and the schools that do provide care are not convenient to all the citizens who live at some distance from their facilities.

Dental Care for You and Your Family

Overview
(an example policy statement by The Ohio State University College of Dentistry)

Faculty and students take pride in the quality of care provided in Dental School. Dedicated staff help patients learn which patient care area is best suited to their needs. Dental and dental hygiene students provide the majority of the treatment, supervised by faculty engaged in teaching, research and patient care. At a Dental School, caring for patients--and caring about patients--is our goal. We provide complete family dental care while helping our patients to prevent dental disease. Before beginning any treatment, dental health care providers conduct a complete examination to determine the best course of dental care. Our faculty review and evaluate all treatment provided by students. Patient care may take longer, but personal attention and supervision are assured.

Insurance

The Dental School accepts insurance reimbusement as direct payment for services rendered.  Patients customarily pay for their treatment at each visit.  We need complete information about your plan, so bring your insurance card with you.  We can submit claims to your insurance company to reimburse either you or a Dental School.  For the most accurate information about coverage, check with your carrier or insurance manual for advice

Care for Adults

At your first visit, we will tell you about our programs and perform your initial examination. You will be assigned to a student dentist who will discuss with you the proposed treatment, its estimated cost, and the approximate length of time it should take to complete your care.

Your child will be assigned to a student dentist or a specialist in training, depending upon your child’s needs

Special Care for Special People

The Special Care program meets the dental needs of the disabled. Children, teenagers and adults receive dental care in a area reserved for those with special medical problems.

Appointment Cancellation

During normal working hours, call the number given to you by your receptionist.

Infection Control Program

All caregivers wear protective gloves, mask and eye coverage at all appointments to comply with infection control guidelinesAll dental equipment, including dental drills, are sterilized before each use.

A Dental School generally keeps its fees as low as possible, despite the high cost of providing dental care. This is their way of ensuring a true value for patients whose treatment takes more time than it might with other providers.

Patients are quoted the cost of treatment following a complete examination and formulation of a treatment plan.

The Dental School clinics accept many forms of payment: cash, checks, Visa, Discover and Master Card (at this time American Express is not accepted). Complete payment for a procedure is usually due at the start of most treatment; exception is made for bridges, dentures, and other restorations that take several appointments to complete.

Insurance offices process insurance claim forms for direct reimbursement for covered services under many insurance plans, contact them with further questions.

Dental schools provide general and specialty dental care, delivered by dental students and faculty at significantly reduced fees.  Services at the Pre-Doctoral Clinics take longer than at private dental practices because they are provided by student dentists under the close supervision of expert faculty dentists who periodically check the progress of procedures to ensure high quality care.  Many patients believe it is worth spending the extra time in this teaching setting so that they can receive excellent care at significantly reduced fees.

The Pre-Doctoral Clinics can offer the following services:

  •   Oral Diagnosis and Treatment Planning

Please bring the following to your first appointment:
