Dental School Dental Clinics Save Money
Friday, December 19, 2008 at 11:32AM Finding Lower Cost Dentistry
Supervised treatment in an academic setting proves to be viable alternative for some patients.
The passage of the Health Care Reform in March of 2010,
offered little imparovement of dental benefits for
undeserved patients in need of dentistry.
It will take years to increase the number of dental providers, whether thay be "full fledged" Dentists, or some form of limited "Dental Nurses" such as have been trained in New Zealand to serve the native american populations of the Alaska wilderness areas.
One dependable source of reduced cost dental care are the Dental Schools. But 14 states don;t have dental schools and the schools that do provide care are not convenient to all the citizens who live at some distance from their facilities.

Special Care for Special People
.
A Dental School generally keeps its fees as low as possible, despite the high cost of providing dental care. This is their way of ensuring a true value for patients whose treatment takes more time than it might with other providers.
Patients are quoted the cost of treatment following a complete examination and formulation of a treatment plan.
The Dental School clinics accept many forms of payment: cash, checks, Visa, Discover and Master Card (at this time American Express is not accepted). Complete payment for a procedure is usually due at the start of most treatment; exception is made for bridges, dentures, and other restorations that take several appointments to complete.
Insurance offices process insurance claim forms for direct reimbursement for covered services under many insurance plans, contact them with further questions.
Dental schools provide general and specialty dental care, delivered by dental students and faculty at significantly reduced fees. Services at the Pre-Doctoral Clinics take longer than at private dental practices because they are provided by student dentists under the close supervision of expert faculty dentists who periodically check the progress of procedures to ensure high quality care. Many patients believe it is worth spending the extra time in this teaching setting so that they can receive excellent care at significantly reduced fees.
The Pre-Doctoral Clinics can offer the following services:
- Oral Diagnosis and Treatment Planning
- Restorative Dentistry (fillings, crowns and bridges, partial and complete dentures, and implant restorations)
- Esthetic Dentistry (limited esthetic dentistry services, including tooth-colored fillings and basic teeth whitening and bonding services)
- Endodontics (root canals)
- Pediatric dentistry (for children ages 6 months to 18 years)
Services include: - Comprehensive oral evaluation
- Teeth Cleaning
- Fluoride treatments
- Sealants
- Tooth-colored fillings
- Space maintainers
- Athletic mouth guards
- Orthodontic care (braces)
- Teeth dentistry
- Diet evaluation and advice
- Assessment of risk of tooth decay
- Periodontics (treatment of gum disease)
- Routine cleanings and exams (for existing patients)
- Additional Special Services:
- Geriatric Dentistry (Patients seen by special arrangement only
- Ryan White Grant for patients with HIV (Patients seen upon referral from a physician.
- Services for Victims of Domestic Violence (Totally anonymous services--To protect patients' anonymity, patients are assigned numbers and do not provide their names.
New patients generally have two initial appointments before treatment begins. At your first visit, we will review your medical and dental history, perform a preliminary oral exam, and take a complete set of dental x-rays (as needed). At the second appointment a comprehensive oral exam, Treatment Plan, and cost are discussed. (Each of these appointments lasts 1½ to 3 hours.)
Please bring the following to your first appointment:
- Dental insurance card and photo identification (
- Dental x-rays taken in the last two years
- List of your current medications and dosages
- Primary care physician's name, address, and phone number
- Emergency contact's name and phone number
- Payment or co-payment by cash, check, or MasterCard, Visa, or Discover credit/debit card
Payments, Insurance, and Consideration for Reduced Fees
If you have other dental insurance, we will provide you with payment documentation (i.e., a receipt and list of services provided) so that you can file a claim for reimbursement with your insurance company.
If you do not speak English you may need an interpreter, please bring someone to assist you.
When circumstances dictate a reduced fee here is an example of the Reduced Fee Form
(download file )that is used at The Ohio State University Collge of Dentistry to request lower fees.
