Mouthwash Factoid

label_E.jpgSustained, daily use of an alcohol-containing mouth wash is a bad idea.

Sour breath odor is intensified by an alcohol-dried irritated mouth.

Many mouth washes contain from 20% to 27% alcohol. (Beer has 6% alcohol; wine has 12.5% alcohol).

In any event, the alcohol irritates the sensitive lining our the mouth an should not be used every day.  There are a number of alcohol-free mouth washes-- and here --and here.

The antibacterial effect of mouth wash lasts about 20 minutes.  The bacteria are protected in the gum crevices around and in-between the teeth.  The bacteria can hide there unless the seal on these crevices is penetrated by using a Water Pik.  The "fresh feeling" is just a feeling -- an illusion of cleanliness -- that last for a short while. Toothbrushing, flossing and/or using the WaterPik are much more effective oral hygiene techniques and much less expensive.
