Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 09:00AM In terms of student enrollment the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine is the largest medical school in the United States.
The health care reform process depends upon there being enough primary care doctors to meet the needs of newly eligible patients looking for care.
Somehow, this seems to have escaped the notice of the allopathic medical schools-but "GROWTH" is the business plan for the burgeoning drive to build schools of Osteopathic Medicine AND DENTISTRY.
The Osteopaths' entrepreneurial spirit has now spread to Dental Schools as well.
1. Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine plan for two dental schools is particularly entrepreneural: How innovative to recognize that the Dental School Business is scalable--Dr. Robert Hirsch and his administration have taken a page from the operation manuals of the scalable computer industry and applied it to the stodgy dental education field. One of the branches of the LECOM School of Dental Medicine will be at the home campus in Erie, PA and the other in near Bradenton, FL.

2. AT Still Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health dentrepreneures are close behind with their satellite Florida Dental School branch.
This is not the first time that Osteopaths have stepped up to help plug the holes the US health care medical personnel supply.
Osteopaths first became eligible to serve as physicians in the US Armed Forces in 1966. And thereby hangs an Interesting Tale.
A rule in the Selective Service System or "Draft" was that specific job skills or professions could not be targeted by drafting them specifically. LBJ was pushing the Vietnam War with a "Guns and Butter" policy of not requiring higher taxes or an increased Draft for the military.
Not getting enough MDs in the draft, LBJ OK'd the use of Osteopaths in the Medical Corps on an equal professional basis as Allopathic physicians (MD's).
Osteopaths met the need for more Docs then... and they are stepping up to our need now.
Osteopaths are once again raising to our need by ramping up enrollments to serve our present need for more students in medical and dental education.
The US health care community is wakening to the need for more access to dental care. And in a few years the new dental health care providers will be graduated from Osteopathic instutions.
