"Just give me the Reader's Digest Version"

My wife attended the Kettering Memorial Hospital to be checked out for an accident that occurred during her Tap Dance Lesson the day before.

She was admitted to the emergency room promptly and eventually a doctor came to evaluate her condition.  During her interview, while she was relating her history, the resident, Gene Corson, M.D., (feeling that she was being too detailed in the description?), told her. " Just give me the Reader's Digest Version."

Before hearing this, we hadn't understood that the Wright State Medical School had expanded their curriculum to include Diagnostic Clairvoyance.  We left soon after.

My wife has made educational hospital videos for years, besides bringing two boys (with overly interesting medical histories) to maturity.  The information she was providing to the ER doc was appropriate.

The advent of all physicians being employees of Accountable Care Organizations instead of being primarily agents for the patient will sadly result in less attention being paid to Patients.

All physicians will be employees of Accountable Care Organizations and the agenda of the Physician's Employer will take precedence.

In a simpler time every child was still taught the Golden Rule: "One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself."  The Iron Rule drives the new treatment algorithm: "Third-Party Payers who have the Gold, make the Rules."

The take away message?  Don't go to the hospital alone.  Make sure you have a family member or friend to help serve as YOUR Health Advocate.
