The tiny instruments that we use at Yellow Springs Dental Care to shape teeth and put in fillings are called “Burs” (or in laymen’s’ terms, Drill Bits).

These Burs are manufactured in literally hundreds (if not thousands) of specialized shapes sizes and textures.  They are basically very hard carbide steel.  Some burs are layered with diamond dust to cover  them with the hardness of the hardest stone in the world.

Most are less than one inch in length and just over a millimeter in diameter.  So small that they are difficult to identify  with clarity in two-dimensioned Bur Catalogs.

Traditionally, these specialized items of the dentist’s armamentarium have been sold by “Detail Persons” who come to dentists offices with actual burs arrayed in display cases to help the dentist  the dentist choose exactly the bur that is required to meet specialized tasks.
