It is interesting to step back and view the different levels of dentistry that are becoming available.
Dentistry, like any other endeavor is shaped and nudged into new directions by the vicissitudes of our economy. And a common theme of our digital society is Expanding Choices.
The recession has changed both the resources and the demands for dentistry in our country. Even though 90% remain employed they pay more attention to how they spend their money in response to seeing the 10% who are unemployed . Young people, unable to find jobs boomerang back into the family home.
The demand for cosmetic procedures has contracted from the levels of ten and fifteen years ago. Meanwhile Safety-Net Dentistry has grown and high-end Digital Dentistry capabilities are expanding also.
Although ObamaCare has largely ignored Dentistry the W.K.Kellogg Foundation has bankrolled pilot projects to establish “mid-level provider” education program in a number of states. The long-sought goal of a single, national dentist licensing examination seems to be becoming reality. Both of these initiatives will lower the enntrace costs for dental care.
And of course because our economy is the Largest in the World all these minimalist dental soluitons are occuring simultaneously with the development of very expensive total mouth rehabilitation with implants.
Dentists (and those who would become mid-level therapists) will all be able to find aniches appropriate to their training, inclinations, and capacities.
Patients face the formidable challenge of Choosing from among the treatment alternatives that are becoming available. Many patients will choose purely on the basis of cost. But there will always be those who will require, can afford, and to have Life-Changing Dentistry.
The opportunity for Life-Changing Dentistry occurs only at the rare junctures in our lives, when the possibility for great change coincides with the patient’s decision and financial wherewithal to make it a reality.
We’re not talking about a few fillings. Life-Changing Dentistry is a procedure in the same category as Steve Jobs prolonging his life with a liver/pancreas transplant after being diagnosed with Cancer.
ObamaCare will not underwrite for everyone, what Steve Jobs sought out for himself. Teeth are not covered by Medicare. Medicaid is only a safety-net.
