JPMorgan Chase is all over the news this week because of the huge losses posted by their off-shore investment activities.

Since the de-regulation of the financial sector of our economy that accompanied the repeal of the Glass–Steagall Act, banks have been freed to use their own funds in investments.

Trading in exotic derivative instruments, credit-default swaps, etc., etc. imploded Bear-Stearns, Lehman Brothers, and contributed to our present economic problems.
