Patients enter a nursing home when the life-circumstances require more than a family can provide.

Moving into the care facility is always a difficult and emotional time- and dental problems are deferred.  And usually the new patient’s diminished oral hygiene is an early symptom of their need. But oral hygiene can prevent pneumonia and heart attacks.

So the New Resident usually enters the Care Facility with an accumulation of unmet dental problems.  And often there is a period of confusion that further delays dental attention.

The nursing home short hand phrase of “OBRA’87” refers to the required services and standards established for nursing care residents.  One of the requirements is an early dental assessment of the oral condition of the new resident.

Minor lapses in oral hygiene become major health threats in the nursing home setting.  Neglected Mouths can become germ incubators that promote lung aspiration and circulation of inflammation that can lodge in the heart.

Pneumonia and heart attacks are the two most often cited causes of death in the nursing home setting.
