Fairborn Ohio Give Kids A Smile Free Clinic
FAIRBORN – Dr. Gordon Womack wants every kid to have a smile that makes the child proud.
“We want kids to be pain free, so they can smile,” Womack said.
To do so, Womack and other area dentists will partner to provide free dental care to underprivileged children during a week-long clinic that begins Monday, Feb. 1, 2010 in the Berry Room of the Ervin J. Nutter Center.
More than 25 dentists, nine hygienists and a group of orthodontists are participating in the clinic, Womack said.
“It’s a big team effort,” said Nicky Thomas, office manager at Beavercreek Pediatric Dentistry, which Womack owns.
The group will provide free cleanings, sealants, fillings and other “basic dental needs” to about 500 elementary and middle school children up to age 16 from schools across the Miami Valley, Thomas said.
Services are also available for children with special needs up to the age of 22, she said.
The program is part of the statewide “Give Kids a Smile” initiative sponsored by the Ohio Dental Association. Womack plans to continue to treat children from the clinic who have additional needs, Thomas said.
A 2003 U.S. Surgeon General report found more than 51 million school hours are lost each year to dental-related illness, according to the American Dental Association.
Womack hopes to treat and then pair local children who don’t have a regular dentist with a local professional who participates in the program. “Our goal is for every child to have a dental home,” he said.

Oral Health and Access
to Dental Care for Ohioans, 2007
Dental Care Remains Greene County's Top Unmet Health Care
Need for Children and Low-income Adults
Oral diseases such as tooth decay and gum infections still affect a large proportion of Ohioans.
Unnecessary dental disease and oral infections are costly problems for families, employers and
government. Severe dental problems can result in poor performance or absence from school or work.
Oral disease has been associated with other serious health problems including heart and lung diseases,
stroke, diabetes, low birth weight and premature births.
Access to dental care means that people can get the dental care they need when they want it. To get that
care, a person must have two things: availability of a private dental office or safety net clinic (operated
by local governments, hospitals and community agencies) and a means to pay for the care. Lacking such
means is the most common barrier to accessing dental care. Low-income families who rely on Medicaid
