The University of Alabama Dental School supports Preventive Dentistry
PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY
WHY IS PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY IMPORTANT AND WHEN SHOULD
YOU START?
Preventive Dentistry means a healthy smile that requires fewer visits to the Dentist:
- Eating becomes more enjoyable because healthy mouths chew more easily
and gain more nutrients from the foods they eat. - You can also speak more quickly and clearly.
- People with healthier mouths have a better chance of general health, because disease in the mouth can endanger the rest of the body.
- A healthy mouth is more attractive, and you can have confidence that you are putting forth your best appearance.
- Preventive Dentistry is the first step to becoming cavity-free.
Preventive dentistry begins Regular Tooth brushing.
The earlier your dental visit, the better the chance of preventing dental disease and reducing your time in the Dentist’s Chair
Visit your dentist for a complete examination to lay the foundations for having the best in dental health.
The university of Alabama Dental School has a proud history of clinical and academic success. My own friendships with Dean Charles McCollum and Professors Emanual Cheraskin and Dr. Charles Alling as instructors in my US Army General Dentistry Residency Program at Fort Jackson South Carolina established their institution as the "GO TO" dental school for expert consultations.
The Proud Tradition Continues
Support Dental Education for more Health Care
Become a Patient
The School of Dentistry has three separate clinical programs that offer the full scope of oral healthcare services.
Student Clinics
In this clinical program, patients are treated by dental students under the direct supervision of the faculty. Patients are admitted based upon their treatment needs and their availability. Fees in this program are the lowest of all the school’s programs (approximately 50 percent lower than private practice), but the time commitment is the greatest. Patients should be available for at least two appointments per month. If you are interested in becoming a patient in this program, you must be evaluated through a screening process to determine if your needs support student training needs.
Specialty Clinics
In these programs, patients are treated by dentists who are receiving advanced general dentistry or specialty training. All care is provided under the direct supervision of the faculty. Comprehensive dental care is provided in these clinics and specialty services are provided in all areas of dentistry. The fees in the specialty clinics are approximately 30 percent lower than in private practice.
UAB Dental Group (Faculty Practice)
In this program, School of Dentistry faculty members—including general dentists and specialists—provide direct patient care in a private-practice setting. Fees are comparable to those in other private practices.
Student Clinics
Appointments: (205) 934-2700 | For patients under the age of 12: (205) 934-4546
Dental care in our student clinics is provided by pre-doctoral students under the supervision of licensed faculty dentists. This ensures that our patients receive consistently high-quality, low-cost care—on average 50 percent less than private practice.
Services Provided
For emergencies or short-term care:
The Limited Care Clinic provides treatment for patients with dental emergencies and limited non-emergency treatment for dental issues such as crowns, fillings, and simple extractions on a walk-in basis. Patients are seen on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration for the morning clinic is held from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Registration for the afternoon clinic is held from 12:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m.
For long-term care:
The Comprehensive Care Clinic provides multidisciplinary dental care, including:
• Implant restorations
• Periodontics (gum disease)
• Operative dentistry (fillings)
• Fixed prosthodontics (crowns and bridges)
• Removable prosthodontics (dentures and partials)
• Oral surgery (extractions)
Become a Patient
Only patients whose dental needs match our clinical program objectives and have the necessary time for treatment are accepted as new patients. A screening visit is necessary to determine if our Comprehensive Care Clinic can manage your dental treatment.
At your first appointment, a screening examination will determine your dental needs, and whether the clinic will be able to provide dental services. A screening appointment does not guarantee that you will be accepted as a patient. If you are accepted as a patient, we will schedule you for any necessary X-rays, and you will then be assigned to a student dentist, who will do a complete dental examination and work out a specific treatment plan that best suits your needs.
Insurance and Payment Policy
The UAB School of Dentistry is a preferred provider organization for Medicaid, Medicare, MetLife and select Blue Cross and Blue Shield group plans. If a patient has other dental insurance coverage, the Business Office will assist in filing these claims; however, payment for treatment will be required at the time of service. Payment can be made by cash, check, or major credit card. Please contact the Business Office with insurance and billing questions at (205) 934-5692.
Hours of Operation
8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday
Specialty Clinics
Appointments: (205) 934-3000
In our specialty clinics, residents (dentists who are being trained as specialists) provide patient care under the close supervision of School of Dentistry faculty members. This ensures that our patients receive consistently high-quality, low-cost care—on average 30 percent less than private practice.
Services Provided
Specialty clinics offer advanced treatment in the areas of general dentistry, endodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, maxillofacial prosthodontics and prosthodontics.
Become a Patient
You may be referred to one of our specialty clinics by our screening clinic or you may make an appointment directly by calling (205) 934-3000. Referring dentists who would like to schedule an appointment with the clinics directly should call the number listed on the individual clinic page (see links above and at left).

Patient Information
How to Become a Patient at The University of Alabama atBirmingham School of Dentistry
Thank you for your interest in the UAB School of Dentistry. We hope you will find this information helpful in answering any questions you may have about the School and its services. Should you need additional information, please call (205) 934-3000.
Our Mission
The mission of the UAB School of Dentistry is to continually improve the well being and oral health of the people. Dental service to the public is a very important part of the teaching program at the UAB School of Dentistry. It serves a twofold purpose:
1. To train dentists for private offices, hospitals, the armed forces, and public health agencies.
2. To meet, in part, the dental needs of the community.
General Information
Treatment at the UAB School of Dentistry is rendered by students under the supervision of faculty members. Only patients whose dental needs match our clinical program objectives and have the necessary time for treatment are accepted as new patients. A screening visit is necessary to determine if your dental treatment can be managed by our clinical programs.
Research is an important part of the UAB School of Dentistry’s program. Faculty members, graduate students, and dental students are engaged in research work on diseases of the mouth, teeth, improved methods of treatment, dental materials, and equipment. As a result of such research in the School and in other similar institutions, the quality of dental service available to people everywhere is improving constantly.
Adult Patient Registration Process
If you have a dental emergency during clinic hours and are in need of urgent care, patients are registered on a walk in basis. For the morning clinic, registration is held from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and for the afternoon clinic, registration is held from 12:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m.
If you are interested in becoming a new patient for routine comprehensive care, please call 205-934-2700 or 205-934-3000 between the hours
of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday to make an appointment.
Pediatric Patient Registration Process
For patients under the age of 12, please call 205-975-1088 for information about the Pediatric Dental Clinic.
Student Assignments
Following a patient’s initial examination, if the patient’s dental needs meet the School’s clinical program objectives, then the patient will be assigned to a student. An initial treatment plan will be outlined for the patient with the estimated fees listed for each treatment.
All work is carefully supervised by a faculty member. This review process causes the treatment to take longer than in a private practice. Patients are asked to be available at least one-half day each week for appointments. In most cases, many appointments are needed. If you cannot devote a considerable amount of time for your appointments, we suggest that you see a private practice dentist.
Fees
Payment is due at the time of service and may be paid by cash, check, or credit card.
UAB Dental Group
If you would prefer to be seen by a UAB dental faculty member, please contact the UAB Dental Group. You can schedule an appointment by calling (205) 934-2340. The UAB Dental Group is comprised of full-time faculty members who see patients in a private practice setting.
Faculty Practice New Patients Info
To become a patient of the UAB Dental Group, call (205) 934-2340 to make an appointment.
Your first appointment will go more quickly if you download our new patient registration form (click here to download) and complete it prior to your office visit. In addition to the completed registration form, please bring your driver’s license (or picture ID) and your insurance card (if applicable). Copayments or payment for non-covered services will be due at time of service. For more information on payment, visit Billing Information. You may also want to refer to the following documents:
Insurance
The UAB Dental Group currently has providers that participate with MetLife, BCBS of Alabama, Delta Dental, Cigna, Guardian, and Medicaid. Please note that not every dentist is a preferred provider for these plans, so we urge you to inquire as to their status. Furthermore, it is your responsibility to check your eligibility and benefits prior to your first appointment. As a courtesy, we will file your insurance claim with your primary insurance, however we currently do not file secondary insurance claims, as out-of-network claims are not paid to us.
