The University of Florida College of Dentistry supports Preventive Dentistry
PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY
WHY IS PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY IMPORTANT AND WHEN SHOULD
YOU START?
Preventive Dentistry means a healthy smile that requires fewer visits to the Dentist:
- Eating becomes more enjoyable because healthy mouths chew more easily
and gain more nutrients from the foods they eat. - You can also speak more quickly and clearly.
- People with healthier mouths have a better chance of general health, because disease in the mouth can endanger the rest of the body.
- A healthy mouth is more attractive, and you can have confidence that you are putting forth your best appearance.
- Preventive Dentistry is the first step to becoming cavity-free.
Preventive dentistry begins Regular Tooth brushing.
The earlier your dental visit, the better the chance of preventing dental disease and reducing your time in the Dentist’s Chair
Visit your dentist for a complete examination to lay the foundations for having the best in dental health.
Florida cares about Dental Care Access.
The Residents of Florida are fortunate to have the University of Florida working with a network of dental clinics around the state to provide dental care.
Dental Students and the Dental School Faculty Practice are ready to provide the dental care you may need!
I have reviewed every dental school clinic program in the United States and Canada. In my opinion, none outdoes the services offered by Florida!

How to Become a Patient in our Student Dental Clinic
Patients desiring to be considered for treatment in the adult student clinics (13 years old or older) need to apply for a screening appointment.
The screening appointment will be a brief examination by a faculty member to determine if your needs are compatible with the educational needs of our students. The necessary x-rays will be taken at this appointment. There is a fee of $95.00 for the examination and the x-rays. All fees are due at the time service is provided. Patients who are not accepted into the student clinics will be referred to the UF College of Dentistry Faculty Practice, a specialty program, or be advised to go to private practice.
Once your screening appointment and X-rays are completed, you will be referred to Patient Assignment. Your assignment to a student dentist is based on your potential treatment needs, not on the date you were screened. When an appropriate student is available, you will be assigned. The average time between screening and assignment to a student is two months. Once assigned, the student will contact you and arrange for an appointment to develop a detailed plan and begin treatment.
The fees in the student program generally are 50% less than those in private practice. You will be required to pay for routine care each time you come. For more extensive treatment, such as crowns or dentures, payment plans may be arranged.
To insure the safety of children, they will not be allowed to accompany you into the treatment area or be left unattended in the waiting area. Please arrange appropriate childcare.
Please Note
Patients are not assigned to students if they have outstanding balances from prior treatment in the College of Dentistry.
If You:
- Are 12 Years old or younger, please contact our Pediatric (Children's) clinic at 352.273.7643.
- Are from outside Gainesville, you may want to visit one of our Satellite Clinics
- Want Orthodontic treatment (braces), please contact our Orthodontic Clinics at 352.273.7960
- Need wisdom teeth extracted (third molars), contact Oral Surgery at 352.273.6731
- Are in pain, visit the Student Oral Surgery Clinic (ph. 352.273.6705)

Patient Information
We're pleased that you are interested in becoming a patient at the University of Florida College of Dentistry. This page was prepared to acquaint you with the procedures and policies related to patient care and the benefits to you as a prospective patient. Please read this information carefully.
This is essentially an "in house" private practice where full-time University of Florida College of Dentistry residents treat patients. Because of high demand, our clinic accepts patients on a limited basis. We accept new patients as treatment of existing patients is completed. All types of general and specialty treatment are available. Fees are approximately 30% less than a private practice.
Emergency care is available to anyone needing relief from pain. We see the first eight patients at our door at 7:30 a.m. The wait could exceed several hours, so please be prepared. We make very effort to see our patients in a timely manner. Our emergency clinic offers extractions, initiation of root canal therapy, temporary fillings, and other relief of pain procedures only. There is a minimum fee of $141 expected prior to treatment.

How to Become a Patient
To be considered for treatment in the resident clinics, call 727.394.6064 and request a screening appointment. There is a brief examination by a faculty member to determine if the patient's needs are compatible with educational needs. All fees are due at the time service is provided.
Once the screening examination is completed, we enter the patient's treatment needs into our computerized file. An appropriate resident, if available, is assigned to care for that patient. Once the assignment is made, we will contact the patient and arrange for an appointment to develop a detailed treatment plan and begin treatment. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that all patients awaiting assignment will in fact be assigned.
Insurance
Insurance is not accepted.
Patient Rights
As a prospective patient, you have the right to considerate, respectful and confidential treatment regardless of race, national origin, religion, sexual orientation or physical handicap. If assigned to a student for treatment, you have the right to a thorough dental examination, a review of your medical history, and a complete explanation of treatment options. If you have a disability, such as sight or hearing impairment, or require wheelchair assistance, please call 727.394.6064. Every effort will be made to assist you during your dental treatment.

The University Of Florida College Of Dentistry Has Closed its Jacksonville Clinic. Our students and faculty participate in interdisciplinary learning and research that benefits the college and its patient community, and also results in a well-rounded curriculum that produces dentists skillful in the art and science of dentistry. The College of Dentistry educates the state’s future dentists and dental specialists through 16 degree and certificate programs. Each year the college admits a new class of about 80 D.M.D. students who are among the top pre-dental students in the nation.
The college is nationally recognized for its oral health research enterprise, emphasizing infectious diseases in dentistry, bone biology, pain and neurosciences, and translational research to improve clinical and dental care. The college has a multi-faceted service mission encompassing patient care and community outreach and education. Through its Statewide Network for Community Oral Health, the college is one of the largest providers of low-cost dental care in Florida providing nearly 10 percent of all indigent care to Florida’s residents through comprehensive state-of-the-art clinical services. In 2007-08, a contract with the Department of Health entitled "Enhanced Indigent Care" was used to offset network costs related to patient care delivery for low-income and indigent patients. Our students and faculty also give of themselves in providing free dental treatment to underserved populations during service missions abroad and at home.

Project Activities
The RWJ Round 2 Dental Pipeline grant has served as a tremendous overall catalyst for improvement in both accesses to dental services in our network and enhancement of clinical education for our students. Our goal to increase senior student extramural rotation time from four weeks to six weeks was initiated with our summer semester in April 2008. An additional two weeks will be added in year 2 of the grant. In conjunction with this increase in extramural experience we will be implementing an RVU (Relative Value Unit) method of tracking all student clinical experiences during their education at UFCD. This will be partially implemented in April of 2008 with full implementation occurring as we transition to a comprehensive care clinical model of education in August of 2008. Four additional didactic hours have been added to the curriculum to more fully prepare students for their extramural experiences. These will be taught in seminar style sessions commencing in fall 2008 and will cover topics including background demographics and enhancement of communication in a clinically relevant setting, as well as safety net dental care.
We have targeted Duval County, Florida as the site of our initial expansion for numerous reasons. It is an economically diverse metropolitan area with a large patient base that is significantly lacking dental resources for the vast majority of its residents. We have identified outstanding partnership potential with the I.M. Sulzbacher Center for the Homeless, Shands Jacksonville Hospital, Duval County Health Department, and Northeast Florida AHEC. These partnerships are ideal in that they will provide an exceptional clinical and social learning experience for our students.
