Free dental screening for kids Saturday
A free dental screening for kids will be offered Saturday in Newnan.
The LaGrange Chapter of Links Inc. will hold the free children's dental screening -- "Brush up Your Smile" -- from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the Golden Corral restaurant at 605 Bullsboro Drive.
The dental program is for children ages 2 to 14. A mobile dental van will be manned by dentists Dr. Jordan A. Brunson, Dr. Charles Cheney, and Dr. Travis Kimathi.
Brunson, a native of Dallas, Texas, holds degrees from Morehouse College and The University of Michigan School of Dentistry.
Cheney of Complete Dental Arts, P.C. is a graduate of Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston, MA and Tougaloo College in Tougaloo, MS.
Kimathi (Dr. K) attended Creighton University and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for four years for undergraduate studies where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in chemistry. He attended the University of Nebraska Medical Center for his dental training. His dentistry focuses on working with children.
This program is directly related to the national program of The Links Inc.
The outreach is expanded from previous dental programs and is geared to reach more of the general population, according to a Links spokesperson.

The passage of the Health Care Reform in March of 2010,
offered little imparovement of dental benefits for undeserved patients in need of dentistry.
It will take years to increase the number of dental providers, whether thay be "full fledged" dentists, or some form of limited "Dental Nurses" such as have been trained in New Zealand to serve the native american populations of the Alaska wilderness areas.
One dependable source of reduced cost dental care are the Dental Schools. But 14 states don;t have dental schools and the schools that do provide care are not convenient to all the citizens who live at some distance from their facilities.
ADULT CLINICS
Quality care could be provided at one of three levels.
Dental & Dental Hygiene Students provide care in well-supervised clinics. Fees are lower than in a private dental office, but appointments are longer and more often to complete treatment. Appointments will be one to four hours, less for pediatric patients.
Graduate Students have already earned a dental degree and are receiving additional training in a specialty area. Your care may be provided in a specialty program if your needs require.
UDA - University Dental Associates (Advanced Clinical Practice) includes general practitioners and specialists who are on faculty at the College. Fees will be similar to private practice in the area. You may seek care with University Dental Associates from the start by calling (402) 472-8900.
PEDIATRIC CLINICS
Dental & Hygiene Students provide comprehensive care in well-supervised clinics. Parents are asked to wait in the reception area. Appointments generally last no longer than one hour.
The Tobacco Cessation Clinic at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry provides individual counseling and personal followup for those who wish to stop smoking or stop using any form of tobacco.
ADVANCED CLINICAL PRACTICE
UDA - University Dental Associates includes more than twenty general dentists and dental specialists who are full time faculty and provide comprehensive, high quality dental care directly to patients at the College. Fees for those services are similar to those of other private practices in the area.
You may make appointments with dentists participating in University Dental Associates by calling (402) 472-8900.
FACULTY PRACTICE
Quality patient care programs are fully integrated into the College of Dentistry's mission of education, research, and public service. Dental and dental hygiene students, and post-graduate residents diagnose and treat children, adolescents, and adults and in all dental specialties. In addition, faculty members who are members of the University Dental Associates practice their profession in the Advanced Clinical Practice area in the College of Dentistry building. Faculty members diagnose and treat patients of all ages, providing care in the areas of cosmetic and restorative dentistry, endodontics, periodontics, oral surgery, prosthodontics, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, radiology, and oral pathology/oral medicine.
Patients can choose to receive care at three levels within the UNMC College of Dentistry: 1) student (dental and dental hygiene students), 2) postgraduate resident (dentists who are in advanced dental education programs), and 3) faculty providers.
