How to Become a Patient At

PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY

WHY IS PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY IMPORTANT AND WHEN SHOULD
YOU START?

Preventive Dentistry means a healthy smile that requires fewer visits to the Dentist:

  1. Eating becomes more enjoyable because healthy mouths chew more easily
and gain more nutrients from the foods they eat.
  2. You can also speak more quickly and clearly.
  3. People with healthier mouths have a better chance of general health, because disease in the mouth can endanger the rest of the body.
  4. A healthy mouth is more attractive, and you can have confidence that you are putting forth your best appearance.
  5. Preventive Dentistry is the first step to becoming cavity-free.

Preventive dentistry begins Regular Tooth brushing.
The earlier your dental visit, the better the chance of preventing dental disease and reducing your time in the Dentist’s Chair
Visit your dentist for a complete examination to lay the foundations for having the best in dental health.

The Dental School has three separate clinical programs that offer the full scope of oral healthcare services.

Predoctoral Clinic: In this clinical program, patients are treated by dental students under the direct supervision of the faculty. Patients are admitted based upon their treatment needs and their availability. Fees in this program are the lowest of all the School’s programs (approximately 60% lower than private practice) but the time commitment is the greatest. Patients should be available for at least 2 appointments per month. If you are interested in becoming a patient in the predoctoral program, you must be evaluated through a screening process to determine if your needs support student training needs. For a predoctoral program evaluation appointment call 210-567-3217 or go online to www.dentalscreening.com

Advanced Education Clinics: In these programs, patients are treated by dentists who are receiving advanced general dentistry or specialty training. All care is provided under the direct supervision of the faculty. Comprehensive dental care is provided in the Advanced General Dentistry clinic and specialty services are provided in all areas of dentistry. The fees in the advanced education clinics are approximately 30% lower than in private practice.

Welcome to the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio (UTHSCSA) Dental School Online Screening Application. Each year we provide treatment to more than 3,000 patients in our pre-doctoral clinic. We screen individuals year-round to identify potential patients.

Your first visit to the school will be for dental screening.  During the screening visit we will determine whether your treatment could be performed by a dental student.  If your treatment needs match our students’ need for experience and the current patient's they are treating, you will be assigned to a student for care. After being assigned to a student, you will be contacted to set up an admissions appointment where the student will do a comprehensive examination and treatment plan. If your treatment needs are not appropriate to our pre-doctoral program you may be referred to our graduate or specialty clinics.

The information from your screening appointment will be kept on file for 1 year. You will be contacted as soon as an appointment is available. Unfortunately, not all individuals who are screened will be accepted as patients. It is always your option to seek care outside the school, particularly if you have an urgent need for care.

Your expectations as a patient

- You must be available 1/2 day a week for treatment
- You must make all scheduled appointments
- You may be dismissed if you fail multiple appointments

Where is the Dental School located?
The Dental School is located on the UTHSCSA Campus at 7703 Floyd Curl Drive in the Medical Center area at the intersection of Medical Drive and Floyd Curl Drive.

Who is eligible for care at the Dental School?
Almost everyone is eligible for care at the Dental School. However, if you have very complex dental needs or if you have complicated medical problems you may be advised that treatment at the pre-doctoral clinic will not be possible.   Conversely, if you have very minor dental needs you may not be selected as a patient

How much does it cost?
You will pay $10 for the screening appointment.  That fee includes any X-rays ordered by the supervising dentist at that session.  If you are accepted as a patient and assigned to a student, you will be presented with a written treatment plan that lists all anticipated costs.   The fees you will be charged in our pre-doctoral program are significantly lower than in a private practice.  The fees you will be charged in our post-doctoral clinics are somewhat higher than in the pre-doctoral program but still lower than in private practice.

When do I pay?
You are expected to pay by cash, check, or credit card on or before the day services are rendered, based on the type of procedures you need.  If you have dental insurance, we can help you file your claim.

What can I expect if I become a patient at the Dental School?
- You will receive a comprehensive examination including X-rays. (Note: A small number of patients will be approved for limited care and will not receive a comprehensive exam.)
- You will receive treatment by a student under the supervision of a licensed dentist faculty member.
- Your appointments may be longer than normal at a private office because of the close supervision.
- Completion of all your treatment may require more visits than in a private practice.

How can I become a patient at the Dental School?
If you wish to request a screening appointment, please fill out and submit the “Request For Screening” by clicking the link below. The Website is secure and the information that you submit will be used by the Dental School only.  Thank you for your interest in becoming a patient.

This correspondence will be kept on file for a period of one year.  During that period you may be contacted for a screening appointment.  The fee for the screening is ten dollars that you will pay at the first appointment.  A radiograph will be made and you will be advised of your dental needs.  Although we cannot guarantee that we can provide treatment, knowing and understanding your dental needs will assist you in making informed decision about your dental care.
