Do I have to pay for treatment?
Yes. Patients are requested to pay for the treatment provided at the time of service. Our fees are approximately 50% less than the fees at a private practice dental office.
Do you offer financial assistance or charge on a sliding fee scale?
No. Our fees are set at a flat rate.
Does the Dental School provide a price list for services?
No. Due to the variation of dental procedures we can not give out price lists. Once accepted as a patient and assigned a dental student, you will be given a comprehensive treatment plan which will include fees.
How do I become a patient of the Dental School?
All new patients of the dental school are required to go through our screening process. During the screening process, you can expect to have a panoramic x-ray and a dental exam by four of our faculty members. Our screening process is designed to determine if you will be accepted as a patient. To schedule a screening appointment you will need to call (804) 828-9190.
How long does each appointment take?
Due to the fact that we are a teaching facility, each appointment will be scheduled either from 9:00 AM -12:00 PM or 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM. You will need to plan on being at the dental school for the full three hours.
Fees and Insurance
Patients are requested to pay for treatment as services are rendered. For your convenience, we accept cash, checks, Master Card, VISA and Discover. Our insurance coordinator will file your insurance claims. If your carrier will not submit payment directly to the School of Dentistry, you will need to pay when services are rendered and the insurance reimbursement will be sent directly to you. We also provide interest-free loans upon approval of your loan application.

To register for an initial screening examination, call (804) 828-9190.
During the initial visit, the faculty will assess your overall dental needs to determine whether your needs meet the educational objectives for the dental students. Although we accept the majority of patients who request our services, we regret that we cannot accept some patients because their needs may be too complex for management by a dental student. In accepting patients, the school does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, sex, national origin, age, or disability.

Dental Student Clinics
Patients seeking affordable and comprehensive dental care generally choose to receive their treatment through the student clinics. The students under the direct supervision of the faculty render all dental care. While the delivery of dental care takes longer, each patient is assured of receiving quality care and the personal attention of the faculty and staff. In order to manage treatment in a timely fashion, patients are asked to be available for at least one three-hour session each week.
Dental Hygiene Student Clinic
Welcome to our clinic! The dental hygiene program at Virginia Commonwealth University provides comprehensive dental hygiene care from August through mid-May. These services are available to VCU students, faculty, and staff and to the local community. Dental hygiene care centers on the prevention and control of oral diseases; our emphasis is on the maintenance of health. Dental hygiene students offer a broad range of oral health services. Preventive treatment appointments are usually two to three hours in length, and some patients need more than one visit for completion of services. Our patients receive personalized and individualized care that is thoroughly monitored by the dental and dental hygiene faculty.
Specialty and Advanced Education Clinics
Our specialty and graduate education clinics offer comprehensive general dentistry and specialty care, particularly for patients who require coordinated care between specialists. The patient care is provided by dentists who have completed their general dentistry education and who are now continuing for specialty and advanced general dentistry education. A unique quality of our specialty and graduate education clinics is the daily professional and educational interactions occurring among the practitioners. Board certified faculty members direct all specialty clinics. Our Advanced General Dentistry clinic is directed by and staffed by dental faculty with advanced training in general dentistry.
Dental Faculty Private Practice
Our providers are full time faculty members of the Dental School. They are aware of the latest dental developments, and skilled in the most current techniques. Many are specialists, with board certification or board eligibility, and some hold national and even international recognition. Consultations involving the most difficult treatment plans are managed in the same location.
