ABOUT THE UNLV DENTAL CLINICS

University of Nevada
Las Vegas School of Dental Medicine
1001 Shadow Lane Campus
Las Vegas, NV  89106
702-774-2400

The UNLV School of Dental Medicine is committed to increasing access to quality oral health care for all Nevadans. In addition to educating future dentists, the school is making a difference today by providing oral health care to thousands of Nevadans.

The UNLV School of Dental Medicine operates two clinical facilities in Las Vegas. Our largest facility is on our Shadow Lane Campus, located at 1700 W. Charleston Ave. at the corner of Charleston Ave. and Shadow Lane. This is our primary teaching and clinical facility housing 165 dental operatories and adjunctive clinical, laboratory, and support services.Support Dental Education for Better Health Care

Additionally, plans have been approved to add a new 44,000 sq. ft. building, scheduled to be completed in July of 2007. It will be located adjacent to our main facility on W. Charleston and will provide space for advanced dental education programs and clinics, as well as administrative and faculty offices.

We also operate a community-based dental facility on Wheeler Peak Rd. in North Las Vegas. Both facilities are open to all Nevadans including those participating in some of Nevada’s Medicaid programs.

Emergency Care

Patients who are being treated at either of the facilities for comprehensive care are provided 24 hour emergency care through the UNLV School of Dental Medicine. Call the main UNLV School of Dental Medicine phone number at 774-2400 and you will be given further directions.

Patients who are not regular clinic patients but are experiencing dental pain, swelling, or bleeding may receive limited treatment for their emergency by contacting the Shadow Lane location at 774-2457 or the Enterprise location at 648-7231. If further treatment is necessary after the emergency visit, the patient may obtain a screening appointment as previously discussed, or may be directed to seek care in the private sector.

HOW TO BECOME A PATIENT IN THE STUDENT CLINIC

Patients interested in being considered for treatment in the student clinics should call 702-774-2400 for information on how to get an appointment. Prior to acceptance we require prospective patients to proceed through a "screening appointment." This is a brief examination to determine if the patient’s needs are compatible with the educational needs of our student doctors. Many factors influence acceptance as a patient into our educational program, including but not limited to:

  • suitability for the teaching program;
  • the patient’s health; the complexity of the existing dental needs;
  • time availability for appointments.

If not accepted for care at the school, there will be no charge for the screening appointment.

Patients who are acceptable may be assigned to a student doctor immediately or placed in the patient pool for admissions into the treatment program at a later date. When a patient becomes available and matches the student’s needs, the patient is assigned to a student for comprehensive dental care. A comprehensive oral examination will be scheduled, and at this time there will be a charge for the x-rays and the examination. All patients under the age of 18 must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian.

The UNLV School of Dental Medicine does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, color, religion, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status in provision of education or employment opportunities. This policy extends to patient acceptance and patient assignment to student doctors.

A request for a student doctor based upon race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, or handicap will not be honored and such a request will indicate you will be better served by a private dentist.

HOW TO BECOME A PATIENT IN THE COMMUNITY PRACTICE

Patients desiring treatment in the Community Practice should call 702-648-7231. Services provided in the Community Practice are by Nevada licensed dentists.

The UNLV School of Dental Medicine is not obligated to provide continued treatment after rendering emergency care.

PAYMENT OF FEES

Since the School receives part of its operating budget from its clinical programs, there are patient fees associated with the services rendered. However, these fees in the student clinics are generally less than what one might pay in a private dental practice. The fees in the Community Practices are comparable to a private dental practice.

All fees are expected to be paid at the time of treatment. We accept cash, checks with proper identification, and VISA, MasterCard, and Discover credit cards. Some procedures such as crowns, bridges, dentures, and partial dentures, may be paid in incremental payments, as they require laboratory processing and multiple appointments for completion. A portion of the total fee for the appliance will be collected at the first appointment for the procedure to cover anticipated laboratory expenses. The remaining balance of the fee must be paid in full before the finished appliance is delivered.

Patients with commercial insurance are expected to pay our standard clinic fees by any of the above methods. We will provide the patient with an appropriate standard insurance claim form with all necessary information on procedures performed for submission to your individual insurance company for reimbursement according to your policy
provisions.

The UNLV School of Dental Medicine attempts to keep fees as low as possible. However, rising costs of providing care may require fee increases. Fees may increase without notification. You will always be advised of the fee for a procedure before it is started.

APPOINTMENTS

Dental care with the student doctors may take a longer period of time, but you can be assured of personal attention and supervision. Student doctors and residents provide the majority of treatment, which is always supervised by our dental faculty. Therefore, appointment lengths may vary, but generally range from two to four hours. You should plan to be here a half day every other week for your dental treatment.

Our students have classes they must attend along with taking care of patients. Their time is limited, and it is important that
patients work with their student doctor or resident and meet their appointments.

Appointments in the Community Practice are similar to
a private practice.

MISSED APPOINTMENTS IN THE STUDENT PROGRAM

If you miss an appointment, your student doctor or resident cannot make up that time. Loss of clinic time can keep a student doctor or resident from completing their educational program. More importantly, missed appointments may cause us to discontinue your treatment. If it is absolutely necessary to cancel your appointment, you should do so at least 24 hours before the time of the appointment. You can also
call the Team scheduler to which your treatment has been assigned.

HOURS OF OPERATION

Both UNLV School of Dental Medicine clinical facilities are open Monday–Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. The UNLV School of Dental Medicine observes all recognized state and federal holidays. The Shadow Lane Campus facility may only have limited or emergency care during academic breaks when student doctors are not on campus. Our Enterprise Community Practice operates 52 weeks a year, but does
observe state and federal holidays.

LOCATIONS AND PARKING

Both facilities are located along major bus routes and convenient for public transportation.

The Shadow Lane facility is located at 1700 W. Charleston Ave just west of I-15. The Enterprise facility is located at 1750 Wheeler Peak just west of Martin Luther King Blvd between Vegas Drive and Lake Mead Blvd.

Ample parking is available at each location. Patients visiting the Shadow Lane location should use the parking spaces designated for patients or visitors. The Enterprise facility has open parking.

Telephone numbers and locations for both facilities are as follows:
